Michel Campeau has been exploring the subjective, narrative and ontological dimensions of photography for more than thirty years. Since 2005, with the turn to digital photography, he has been examining photographic darkrooms at home and abroad as post-industrial ruins and debris. His work has been seen in numerous solo exhibitions, including Fouilles dans la zone/Digs in the Zone at Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal (2005) and Arborescences - Beauté et paradoxes at Plein Sud (Longueuil, 2004). In the fall of 2007, the magazine Aperture (New York) published an image from La chambre noire on its cover and an article by Martin Parr on this series. In 1996, a retrospective of his work, entitled Eloquent Images - Photographic Work 1971-1995 was held at the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography in Ottawa. In 1994 he won the Higashikawa International Photography Award in Japan. He is represented by the Simon Blais Gallery in Montreal and the Stephen Bulger Gallery in Toronto. Michel Campeau lives and works in Montreal.
Michel Campeau thanks the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec for their support.
